I Came, I Saw, I KiltWalked

Yesterday marked the first full distance event I have taken part in the year, and a circa 26 mile walk (some suggested it was more) from pitchside at Hampden Park to the shores of Loch Lomond.  An early 7.30am start led to sitting around for a while, munching a roll and sausage (I have to ask how the heck a £2.50 charge for that could be considered “subsidised”? – We’re Scottish, we know what’s cheap hahahaha).  I did manage to bump into someone pre event to wish me luck on the way, none other than Scotland national team manager Mr Craig Levein.  I also managed to get some nice pitchside photos, taking in the chance to get close to the national pitch for the first time.

After a tempered start behind the pipers (rousing send off guys, thanks for the inspiration!) we headed into town under police escort before joining the cycle path at the Clyde, which would eventually lead us to Balloch.  It was a long day, wet at times, and tough going on the canal path.  Just as I hit the wall, I was stumbled upon by an old friend from Maggie’s Night Hike (Hi Jan) who somehow convinced me stand up again and keep walking.  Keep on walking I did to the finish line, despite a combination of severe muscle pain and mile markers which had no relevance to the actual distance to go.

After 6hrs59mins of virtually non stop walking, I crossed the finish line to collect my medal, and proud in the knowledge I had completed my ninth 26 mile event.  Never has a Diet Irn Bru tasted so good!  It’s a mark of how good it was, I didn’t even indulge in the promised pint at the finish line.

HUGE thanks to Jan and Co for getting me through the closing miles, for taking the photo and for the lift back down to Glasgow.
